Leona M. Poletiek passed away July 21, 2012 at the age of 93.

Leona was born, March 11, 1919 to Albert Furlong and Bessie (Bowdish) Furlong in Portland and attended Welches Grade School, Rose City Park Grade School, Grant High School and Northwestern School of Commerce.

Leona and her family grew up attending Portland Foursquare Church where she met and married Arnold Poletiek in 1941. Thanks to the influence of her father and Arnold’s encouragement, she became an astute business woman and worked in several businesses including her husband’s Floorcovering Distributors and her late father’s business, AC Furlong Company.

Leona was very involved in her churches, Portland Foursquare and Portland Christian Center. At Portland Foursquare, she served in the Christian Education Department where she developed the desire to help children. She extended this love of kids by tutoring grade school children in the SMART program. At Portland Christian Center, she was instrumental in developing the business plan to support Hilltop Christian School.

Leona was a loyal friend, a good neighbor, a tough business woman and a great seamstress. She loved her family and couldn’t wait to meet the great-grandkids for the first time.

Leona is survived by her sons, Bill (Sunnie) and Robert; grandchildren, Jay (Jodie), Todd (Diedre), Matthew and Corey; great-grandchildren, Victoria, Lucy and Canten; sister, Dr. Dorothy Jean Furlong.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012 at Riverview Abbey at 10 a.m.
