August 7, 1917 ~ February 19, 2015 (age 97)
While actively raising two children, she was a county librarian, youth group leader, community volunteer, and lifetime church member at St. Mark Presbyterian near Lewis & Clark College.
In retirement, she and “Chuck” spent 30 years exploring the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, coast to coast, by sailboat, powerboat and motorhome. Of traveling she said, “I love the grandeur and learning on the road.” Golf clubs were also essential traveling gear used throughout their travels. Their last residence was at Willamette View Manor in Milwaukie, where they explored new independent living opportunities. Upon Charles’ death, Lillian moved to one of Willamette’s assisted living Neighborhoods where she found another extended “family” to help care for and enrich her last years.
Lil’ was known for her humor, generosity, kindness, sparkling conversation, and pursuit of the “good and the great books to read and digest.” Even after Charles’ passing four years ago, she never lost that desire to stay active nor her graciousness and sense of humor. As one observed after her passing, “I loved her chuckle and the sidelong glances she could throw at you that sent a message of amusement and knowing wisdom.”
She is survived by her daughter Jackie Kleinstub of Portland and son Carl, who resides in The Villages, Fla.
