February 28, 1950 ~ October 27, 2019 (age 69)
Linda Arleen Bastian passed away on October 27, 2019 at home, age 69, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Linda was born in Beechhurst, New York, a small neighborhood in the borough of Queens, New York, on February 28, 1950. Linda was the youngest child of George and Ann Bailey, having an older sister, Marion Kurtz and older brother George Clint Bailey. After graduating from Bayside High School, Linda attended York College of the City University of New York, graduating as valedictorian in 1972. Having majored in mathematics, Linda went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education and completed her teaching credentials from Queens College. Linda loved teaching, a career that spanned 43 years, teaching at the junior high school, high school and college levels.
In 1973 she married her husband, Michael Bastian whom she met in college. Together they had two children, Monica Lynn Bastian, born in 1977 and son Paul Michael Bastian born in 1981. In 1985 she and her family moved from New York to Oregon, settling in Lake Oswego. She soon began her 20-plus years of teaching at Portland Community College.
Linda had a wonderful life. She was a warm, supportive and loving person. She was always able to do the things she loved and brought her fulfillment. She loved the symmetry and beauty of mathematics. She loved the music of the 50’s and 60’s and Broadway shows. She loved to play volleyball. But most of all she loved being a mom and grandma; she was so proud of her children, Monica and Paul and grandchildren, Obi and Odessa, who were the light of her life.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Oregon Health Sciences University Foundation or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
