August 28, 1916 ~ May 1, 2011 (age 94)
“I was born August 28, 1916, in Ardenwald, Oregon, a suburb of Portland, Oregon near Milwaukie. Although I don’t remember myself, I have been told that when time came for me to be born, Mama called one of my sisters to go get the midwife. Reportedly, since Dad (William James Hester) wanted a boy so badly after already having four girls, it was four hours after I was born before my Dad would even look at me. I was his fifth daughter.”
In the 40’s, out of 300 applicants for officer chauffeurs at the Army Headquarters in Fort Vancouver, I was chosen as one of 8 for the motor pool. Different officers from all departments would call the motor pool for chauffeurs. It was a standing insider joke that whenever new officers would come in off the troop trains, it was always the short guys that would ask for me (I was 5’7” in uniform heels.) There was one guy who was in the Veterinary Corps. in charge of Army food inspection. The other gals were put off by him because he would always light up a cigar as soon as he entered their cars. I didn’t mind, so he started always asking for me. His name was Roland Eugene Sivyer, but everyone called him ‘Happy’ or ‘Hap’. We married August 1945.
In the 50’s, through Maria Easterly’s Modeling School, I modeled for The French Boutique, Bergs, Ungars, Meier & Frank, and Lipmans.”
Lucille is survived by her children, Rollie and Suzy, “Mom was giving, loving and young at heart to the end”; and grandchildren, Stephanie Rowan Hartgraves and Matt Rowan, “Hard to believe she was in her 80’s playing Santa in full outfit, hiding hundreds of Easter eggs, and taking us on a Caribbean cruise.”
