April 16, 1931 ~ May 31, 2016 (age 85)
He grew up in the Laurelhurst neighborhood and graduated from Grant High School. He attended Oregon State College and graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering. During his college years, he was employed designing sawmill equipment. Upon graduation, Lyle joined Edward Hines Lumber in Oregon and while working there became a professional engineer. Later, Lyle continued his education at the University of Iowa obtaining a degree in electrical engineering. Returning to Oregon in 1967, he began a 30-year career in substation design at the Bonneville Power Administration. Upon retirement, he continued for BPA and Power Engineers.
Lymphoma was Lyles first cancer that was successfully treated in 1999. It reoccurred 10 years later and was again successfully treated. He underwent treatment for a gall bladder malignancy in 2012 that continued until his death.
His spectrum of friends included friends, neighbors and coworkers. His kindness and thoughtfulness endeared him to everyone and, true to his character, his diligence and hard work for the Laurelhurst Neighborhood Association and help to others, was all done without thought of reward or recognition.
Survivors include his sister, Shirley Jean Howard; and cousins, Malcolm M. Marquis, Philip H. (Jane) Marquis, David W. (Ruthann) Marquis and Julia D. Marquis, all of Portland, Donnell Howard McCart of Waukee, Iowa and Haroldine Howard (Ludwig) John of Monterey, California.
A celebration of life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2016, at Riverview Abbey.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made in his name, Lyle M. Howard, to support cancer research at the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute
