Marc was born and grew up in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. He earned his A.B. in American history magna cum laude at Harvard in 1969, taught second grade at the Brooks School in Concord, Mass., and earned his J.D. at Yale Law School in 1973.
Following a clerkship in Salem, 1973-74, for Chief Justice Kenneth O’Connell of the Oregon Supreme Court, he worked as an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Oregon under Sid Lezak. In 1977, he, Jack Ransom and Jeff Rogers left the U.S. Attorney’s office to start their criminal defense law firm, Ransom Rogers Blackman LLP, which is active today with Kendra Matthews as partner.
In addition to his work as a litigator, Marc was deeply involved in the Oregon legal community. During his career, he served as president of the Multnomah Bar Association, chair of the Oregon State Bar and president of the Gus J. Solomon American Inns of Court. He served on the Multnomah County Legal Aid Society Board of Directors, the U.S. District Court Indigent Representation Committee and acted as cooperating attorney on behalf of the Lawyers’ Committee for the ACLU of Oregon. He did pro bono work for other non-profits as well, including the Prison Legal News. He taught continuing education courses to members of the Oregon Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Oregon District Attorneys Association. He has been recognized in The Best Lawyers in America since its first edition in 1983.
Marc is survived by his wife of 42 years, Susan; sons, Sam (Adriane), Amos (Shannon) and Eli; grandsons, Abe and Solly; and brother, Mitchell. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Multnomah Bar Association Foundation or the Wallace Medical Concern.
A commemorative service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2014, in the Lewis & Clark College chapel.

To the Blackman family,
I was deeply saddened to read of the death of Marc. You don’t always have to know a family to have empathy for them when they lose a loved one in death. I wish to express my deepest sympathy and sincere condolences as you endure this great loss. Our loving Heavenly Father also feels deep empathy and there for assures us that when Revelation 21:4 is fulfilled, death, pain and mourning will be eliminated. And because our savior Jesus Christ gave his life for us, he said “all those in the memorial tombs..will come out.” John 5:28, 29. I pray that these scriptures will comfort you also, as you await the time when you and Marc are reunited in the resurrection and when death, pain, and mourning will be a thing of the past.
With deep sympathy, Joel
