Margaret Hunt Obituary

A Mass of Christian Burial will be said Tuesday at 11:00 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Margaret Ann, passed away peacefully March 31 after a long and courageous battle with cancer at the age of 79.

Aunt Gee, or Magee, as she was fondly referred to by family was born September 12, 1930 in Portland, OR to Hector McNeil and Frances Murphy Hunt. She attended grade school and high school at Holy Child Academy and matriculated to the University of Oregon.

For a time, she worked at Meier and Frank, but the focus of her life was caring for her mother. She was an active and later sustaining member of the Portland Junior League and volunteered at their thrift store. A lifelong Portlander, she enjoyed skiing in Lake Tahoe and at Mt. Hood in the 1970’s, but favored the beach. Margaret Ann was the consummate “beach person” and spent fifty-two summers at her home in Gearhart enjoying the ocean and visiting with neighbors.

Margaret Ann had a unique way about her in her politeness and immaculate attention to detail in everything she did. She loved pouring over fabrics and sewing, creating personalized confections to give at Christmas, and creating garden areas to the dismay of the home owner associations who saw their verandas slope with the weight of her lovely, flowering plants. For the last twenty years, Margaret Ann lived in the Pearl District close to a trolley stop. She took advantage of riding the trolley to her favorite spots, and always took time to chat. She will be remembered by her conversations that always focused on the positive and making the most of everyday. Her grace, kindness, interest in other’s lives, and the newspaper articles she took time to send will be very much missed.

The family would like to recognize her dear friend Donna McElory who began as her caregiver five years ago, but became like a sister over their time together. A heartfelt thank you goes to the caring staff at the Holiday Park Plaza for the exceptional care she received the last weeks of her life.

One reply on “Margaret Hunt”

To Margaret’s lovely family: I was sitting today making little seed starting pots from rolled newspaper. Margaret had given me the delightful wooden tools to create these simple, free pots. I thought it would be fun to make pots and chat with her, sharing old memories from the days when I sewed for her. But when I called her number, I found it was disconnected and further checking told me she had passed away nearly a year ago. I think the last time I talked with her was about 2 months before that. She sounded great. I’ll miss her. But for now I’m going back to making planting pots and I’ll just chat with her like she can hear me. We’ll have a great time. Love and blessings to you and her, Andrea Furber
