Margaret Turner Obituary

Margaret “Maggie” Turner, a long-time resident of Portland, died in her home April 8, 2018 at the age of 86.

Maggie was born July 12, 1931 in Portland, Oregon to Olive and Norman Powne. As children during the Great Depression, she and her older brother, Bob, moved frequently with their parents, living in Cascade Locks, Forest Grove, Banks, and Beaverton. Maggie graduated from Beaverton High School and then moved to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon.

She joined a sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, and enjoyed social activities with her “sisters.” Maggie was a Music major, and she met her future husband, Fred Turner, in Trigonometry class. Maggie and Fred graduated from college in 1953 and were married that summer. Fred went to medical school and Maggie worked as a teacher to support them. After Fred completed a three-year residency in Pennsylvania, the family moved back to the Portland area.

Fred and Maggie were very social and liked to entertain and spend time with friends. Maggie was very busy taking care of the family, but she also developed her interest in embroidery and other fabric arts. Over the years, she became an accomplished and prize-winning artist in fabric and colored pencil drawing. Maggie was active for many years in Local 14 and other arts organizations and loved her Painting Ladies group. She was proud to be a third-generation Oregonian with pioneer roots and enjoyed traveling the state.

Maggie was a loving and proud mother to her three children and enjoyed spending time with her family, which grew to include five grandchildren. Her home was the setting for many holiday meals and special occasions.

She is survived by her husband Fred Turner; children Wendy Swanson, Rich Turner, and Steve Turner; her grandchildren Sarah Swanson, Greta Swanson, Michael Turner, Hannah Turner, and Sydney Turner; and her nephew Charles Powne.

A memorial service will take place at 2 pm on Saturday, April 28th at Valley Community Presbyterian Church, 8060 SW Brentwood Street, in Portland.
