April 18, 1920 ~ October 29, 2014 (age 94)
In 1934, Marion met the love of her life, William Gordon Scott, at a dance at the 7th Regiment Armory in New York, and after a long courtship, they were married April 25, 1942, in Washington, D.C. She remained in New York with her parents for two years while Gordon served in the Pacific as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, during which time they welcomed their first child, William Gordon Jr.
After the war, as Gordon Sr. began his career in the lumber industry in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., the family subsequently moved to Eugene, Portland, Providence, R.I., and finally back to Portland in 1957. Now with five children, Marion and Gordon became involved with St. Thomas More Parish and School, and soon after became founding members of St. John Fisher Parish. Marion was active in her children’s classrooms, the PTA and the church guilds, and treasured these years when many wonderful friendships were formed with families at St. John Fisher.
In more recent years, Marion and Gordon enjoyed traveling, making several trips to England, Scotland and Ireland, and meeting many cousins for the first time. A special trip to Sligo, Ireland allowed her to visit the birthplace of her mother. Enjoyed also were the annual reunions for the Marine Corps 7th Reserve Officer Class held around the country, which they were able to attend for 22 consecutive years. Most importantly was time spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly. She was a kind and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will remain in our hearts forever.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 71 years, Gordon; daughter, Honora; sister, Helen Hexter; sister-in-law, Margaret Magnus; and great-granddaughter, Kailee Gillespie.
She is survived by her sons, Gordon (Paula), Michael and John (Colleen); daughter, Marianne Gillespie (Kerry); nieces, Mary Jane Sardone (Frank) and Barbara Delaney (Jim); eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and loving caregivers, Debbie Lewellen, Breagan lshibashi, Morgan Lewellen, Jake Quijada and Pam Wright, all of whom allowed Marion and Gordon to happily remain in their beloved home. The family will be forever grateful.
Remembrances may be made to St. John Fisher Parish and School, 7007 S.W. 46th Avenue, Portland, OR 97219. A private family mass has been held.
