Marjorie Hindman Obituary

Marjorie passed away quietly in the early morning hours with her daughters by her side. Marjorie was born in Spokane to John and Lillian Gray. She was raised in Washtucna, Wash., on the family’s prominent wheat farm. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1954 with a major in elementary education and a minor in music. In addition to her studies, she belonged to Mu Phi Epsilon, music honorary; and was a Pi Beta Phi and served as president for one year. Post-graduation, she began her teaching career in Orlando, Fla., before moving to Portland to teach at Shattuck Elementary.
On a blind date, she was introduced to her future husband, Charles “Chad” Hindman, whom she married in 1959. They began their life together in their home on the Clackamas River. In 1964 they moved to Lake Oswego where they raised their two daughters, Marta and Elizabeth and enjoyed 53 years of matrimony before his passing in 2012.
Marjorie was an accomplished piano player who started playing at an early age, riding the train from Washtucna to Spokane for lessons studying under Augusta Gentsch and then Elsa Geismar at the University of Washington. She accompanied India Zerbe Jobelmann, Principal Cellist with the Oregon Symphony, for many years. She played the harpsicord as well and always enjoyed the challenge of learning new music. She was also a longtime member of Derthick. While not at the piano bench, she loved spending time in her yard; Clair de Lune or Clair de yard, her fingers were well attuned to both. However, her priority was always her family. A loving wife, dedicated mother and devoted grandmother, she loved her home.
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, Chad; and sister, Kathrine Miles. She is survived by her daughters, Marta Burwell (J.R.) and Elizabeth Donaldson (Jay Campf); granddaughter, Allison Spangler (Paul); and grandson, Daniel Donaldson; sister, Martha Morrison of Orlando; and brother, Walt Gray (Orbie) of Pullman, Wash. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to give a special thanks to the kind and compassionate care Marjorie received at Springridge Court, as well as the care team, who we called angels at Enliven over the last few years.
A Memorial Service will take place at 11 a.m., Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at Christ Church Episcopal Parish, 1060 Chandler Rd., Lake Oswego.
