March 19, 1927 ~ December 23, 2013 (age 86)
Mark was born to Rose and Thurman Moothart in Sioux City, Iowa March 19, 1927. He was the fifth of ten children and grew up in Madison, SD. with brothers, Frank, Don, Jack, Jim and Bill and sisters, Mary, Marge, Delores and Virginia, who died as an infant. He attended grade school and high school at St. Thomas School in Madison. Before entering the service, he attended college at St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN.
He enlisted into the Army in 1945, was initially in infantry training and then attended special training at the Army Finance School in Ft. Harrison, Indiana. He served in the Army Finance Corps during most of his time in the Army and was honorably discharged before moving with his family to Longview, WA. He received a BA degree from St. Martin’s College in Olympia, WA in 1949 with a major in Accounting and minors in Business Administration, Political Science and Philosophy.
In 1948, he was introduced to his beloved Alice Ann on a blind date at a ceremony for Mark’s induction into the Knights of Columbus. They married November 19, 1949 in St. Rose Catholic Church in Longview Washington.
He had a long and accomplished career. He served as an instructor of Accounting and Business Administration at St. Martin’s College from 1949 to 1951. For a short time, he worked at Georgia Pacific Corp. in Olympia. Then later in 1951, he began his 36-year career with Niedermeyer-Martin Co. in Portland. During his tenure he held positions as Office Manager, Director, General Manager of Pacific Wood Treating (a subsidiary) and retired as CFO in 1987.
Throughout his life, Mark was an active and devoted member of the Catholic Church. He held numerous positions within the diocese helping to further the Catholic educational system. His life of service included serving as Director of St. Vincent de Paul, Advisory Board Chairman of the Sisters of St. Mary’s of Oregon, Holy Redeemer Church and School Board Member, St. Agatha’s Parish Finance Committee Chair.
Mark was longtime member of the Knights of Columbus. He was inducted into the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 1996 and rose to the rank of Knight Commander with Star.
Mark was a longtime member of the Milwaukie Elks Lodge Bowling Team and Knights of Columbus Bowling League. One of his favorite pastimes was being at home working in the garden.
Mark and Alice started their family while living in Lacey, WA. They moved to Portland in 1951. During the first 15 years of their 60 year marriage, Mark and Alice joyfully welcomed 10 children: Mary Anne, Jim, Jerry, Carole, Nancy, Tim, Sarah, Linda, Rose and John. They were also blessed with 24 grandchildren: Jennifer, Timothy, Teresa, Shane, Sarah Elizabeth, Matthew, Chris, Adam, Kaity, Anne Marie, Allie, Ryan, Hannah, Shaun, Thomas, Danny, Emily, Alex, Elizabeth, Sam, Tyler, Andrew, Megan and Joseph Mark and four great grandchildren (and counting…) – Wyatt, Sienna, Jozi and Kaden.
Throughout their marriage, Mark and Alice traveled the world. Their adventures included trips to Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, Tahiti, the Holy Land, Greece, Morocco, Spain and Mexico. Family vacations at Black Lake, Lake Oroville, Bend, Sun Valley, the Oregon coast, and Maui were among their favorite destinations.
To the great sorrow of us all, but most especially Mark, he lost his precious “sweetie pie” Alice on her birthday in January 2010.
Mark will be missed by his children, and their spouses: Gordon Spezza, Cathy Moothart, Teri Moothart, Kevin Muller, Tim McCool, and Stephen Ullman.
Surviving siblings, include, Mary Schmidt, James “Bud” Moothart, Marjorie Varner, William Moothart, and Delores Smith.
He was preceded in death by his grandson Thomas, his son-in-law Bill Hice and his brothers Don, Jack, and Frank.
Recitation of the rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, December 30th, 2013, and the funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 31st.
Both will be held in St. Agatha Catholic Church, 1430 Nehalem St., Portland, OR 97202.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are never alone. You can find much comfort in God’s Word, the Bible, which assures us at Psalms 34:18 that God is near to those broken at heart and crushed in spirit. Please accept my deepest sympathies.
