December 15, 1933 ~ June 24, 2011 (age 77)
Born in Mullingar, Ireland, Mary was the second of four children. She attended Loretta Convent School in Mullingar and then Dominican College in Sion Hill, one of the oldest secondary schools in Ireland. At 17 she went to Edinburgh School of Cookery in Scotland where she met a relative of the Spanish Royal Family. The two became friends and Mary spent a year in Tenerife, Spain teaching English to the children.
On her return to Dublin, Mary worked in a dental office and at Trinity College before joining Aer Lingus as a flight attendant on the long haul route between Ireland and America. During that time she married Sean Egan, moved to Canada and later to Oregon. The marriage ended in 1974.
Friends introduced Mary to Maurie Clark in 1980 and they were married on December 24, 1982 at St Thomas More Church in the West Hills. Mary and Maurie lived for 20 years in their riverfront condominium before Maurie’s death in 2001. Mary became involved in charitable giving through the Clark Foundation and was well known in Portland as the person to see for assistance with social service, education and cultural arts projects. She served on many Boards in the past years most recently at the Portland Art Museum, Oregon Symphony, Marylhurst University, and the Japanese Garden.
Mary loved playing bridge and often had friends over for lunch or met them at the Town Club or Thunderbird in Rancho Mirage, CA. When the sun was out Mary loved a good game of golf and would play as often as her schedule allowed. She was very competitive in cards and sports and did not take losing lightly.
Mary was dearly loved by her family and many friends. She will be deeply missed.

Prayers from all the Jesuits of the Oregon Province for Mary and Maurie who have been our great friends and benefactors for many years.
As an Irish exile, Mary remained a true friend of Ireland and supporter of Portland’s Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH).
She donated to help build the Irish Potato Famine Memorial at Mt. Calvary Cemetery and attended many events organized by the AOH including the time she met with Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, in 2008.
The inscription on the Irish Famine Memorial reads “Is dochum Gloire De agus Onora na hEireann”, for the Glory of God and the Honor of Ireland.
That’s how Portland’s AOH remember Mary. God’s servant in honor of Ireland.
