October 20, 1918 ~ January 6, 2013 (age 94)
Mary went to boarding school at Mt. Notre Dame Academy outside Cincinnati, graduating in 1936, afterwards she attended college in New Rochelle, N.Y. She is preceded in death by brothers, Charles H., Edwin T.; and sisters, Grace (Funch) and Helen.
Mary met Robert P. McHugh Jr. (Bob) and they married November 21, 1940. Bob soon enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Burma and India, while Mary became an inspector of airplane parts at Wright-Patterson Air Base in Dayton, Ohio. After Bob returned from the war they settled in Cincinnati. Bob ran the family lumberyard business and Mary was a homemaker.
In 1946 a daughter, Sarah Marie (Sally) was born. She was born with severe disabilities and Mary cared for her at home until her death at the age of 12. Her second child, Robert P. III, was born in 1952. Mary always took care of everyone in the family including her aging father until his death in 1960 at 90 years old.
In 1965 Mary and Bob moved the family out west to Portland and started a new business, Sakrete of Pacific Northwest. Mary worked the office while Bob ran the plant and did outside sales. Business was tough at first, but both were determined to succeed. After the business got going Mary decided to learn a new career and began selling real estate, which she did for many years. Many of her clients and co-workers became good friends.
A lifelong Democrat, she loved discussing and debating politics with a glass of Early Times surrounded by family and friends. After retiring, Bob and Mary enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Carlsbad and Palm Desert, California. Bob passed away in 1997 before their only grandson, Sean, was born in 2000 to Bob III and his wife, Lesli Williamson. Sean was always the apple of his grandmother’s eye. Their time together was short, but Mary loved spending time with her long awaited grandson.
Mary struggled with Alzheimer’s disease for the last five years of her life. Her family wants to thank Mary’s caregivers from Odyssey Hospice, Visiting Angels and Edgewood Point Arbor Care for all the tender loving care they bestowed upon her in recent years.
A memorial Mass will be offered in her honor on January 22, 2013 at 8 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Beaverton. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances be made to: The Alzheimer’s Association.
You can still show your support by sending flowers directly to the family, or by planting a memorial tree in the memory of Mary McHugh
