April 21, 1923 ~ June 15, 2018 (age 95)
She grew up during the depression in Portland with her brother, John Tennant and twelve first cousins of the McCarthy clan. She attended St. Mary’s Cathedral grade school, St. Mary’s Academy and Multnomah College. She met her husband, George Scott when he was a senior at Columbia Prep. At the start of World War II they became engaged and then did not see each other for two years while George served in the U.S. Navy. Mary worked for United Airlines during the War.
They married November 14, 1945 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Mary and George started their family as George went to the University of Portland on the GI bill. In 1950 they went back into the U.S. Navy for two years during the Korean War and lived in Seattle. Returning to Portland, Mary became one of the first women real estate brokers in Oregon. She spent over 40 years working for several real estate firms, lastly with Cronin and Caplan.
Mary and George were married for 53 years until his death in 1998. She soldiered on for 20 years remaining close to her family, active in the MerryMacs at the Multnomah Club, enjoying her book club at the Park Vista and spending her summers playing bridge at her home at Black Butte Ranch.
Her family would like to thank her care givers Meg Talbott and Cynthia Crandall, the staff at The Ackerley and Maryville Nursing Home for their help in Mary’s later years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George Scott; her brother, John Tennant; and her infant daughter, Colleen.
She is survived by her three sons and their families, Mike and Phyllis Scott of Manzanita, Kelly and Erin Scott of Lake Oswego and Casey and Stephanie Scott of Portland; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
