Masako Hinatsu Obituary

Massie Hinatsu died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Nov 17, 2011 after a sudden illness in Washington DC. She was born on Aug 16, 1930 in Milwaukie, OR to Chiyo and Kanichi Endo.

Massie grew up in Milwaukie and was interned at Minidoka Relocation camp in Idaho during WW II. She returned to graduate from Milwaukie High School and then went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in education from Oregon State College in 1952. She taught physical education at Gervais High School, Willamette High School and Roosevelt High School in Oregon before having four children. She taught at YWCA while raising her family, returned to teach special education throughout Multnomah County, and then taught through the Title I program for Portland Public Schools. She retired from teaching in 1995 at Sunnyside Elementary school.

She attended Epworth United Methodist Church since childhood and was active as a Sunday school teacher, committee member and lay leader. She also volunteered with Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center, Ikoi no Kai, Leach Botanical Garden, Fujinami Kai, Camp Fire Girls and others. After retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling overseas and throughout the US and spending time with family. A few of her favorite past times included gardening, golfing, reading and playing bridge.

She is survived by her husband, Dan, of 56 years; children: Stanley (Suzanne) of The Dalles OR, Sally (Dave Kendall) of Portland, Michele (Steve Exe) of Seattle, and Diana of Portland; grandchildren: Elizabeth, Alison and Audrey of The Dalles OR; siblings: Akiko Akagi of Portland, Kazuko Hara of Portland, Tokuko Murdoch of Arlington, TX and Kay Endo of Milwaukie. She was predeceased by her brother Ben Endo.
