October 21, 1937 ~ February 18, 2017 (age 79)
The eldest of four, Maureen was born on October 21st, 1937 in Liverpool, England to adoring parents Alfred and Doris Kelly. After achieving State Registered Nurse credentials in England, she continued to excel, becoming an “operating theatre” nurse. It was in this environment where she met her future husband, Dr. Adel Matar of Giza, Egypt. The hospital romance blossomed and the two were married in Ireland in 1963.
As Dr. Matar’s career advanced, and he completed his studies and residency in the UK, the young couple found themselves making a go of it in Toronto, Canada. This period was short lived, and the Matars made the move to Portland, Oregon in 1968 where they would settle, start a family, and live out the remainder of their years together.
Maureen was a charming, witty and spirited lady whose grace and poise were unending. She was a loving and devoted mother to her two boys, Tarek and Adam, and gave herself fully and selflessly to their upbringing. Her culinary prowess was the envy of all her sons’ peers, and the foundational pillar of countless memorable gatherings.
Mrs. Matar’s inexhaustible love of music, which perhaps blossomed during her formative years witnessing the young Beatles perform regularly at their Liverpool home venue, The Cavern, was a source of great joy which she brought enthusiastically into the lives of her family, her sons in particular.
Maureen is survived by her son, Adam and Daughter-in-Law Danielle, her brothers Brian, David and Paul, and her two grandchildren, Nabila and Hendrix. She is preceded in death by her cherished husband, Dr. Adel Matar, and her beloved son, Tarek.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations may be made in Maureen’s name to Friends Of Trees, a conservation organization near and dear to her heart, which is dedicated to green-space restoration and tree-planting.
You can still show your support by sending flowers directly to the family, or by planting a memorial tree in the memory of Maureen Matar
