Rhoda Collier Obituary

Rhoda-Mae Wolfe was the only child born to Olive and Bert Wolfe, April 14, 1935, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She was raised on a farm until the age of 9, and then moved with her parents to Stony Plain, Alberta and graduated from Memorial High School in June 1952. Following her graduation she moved with her parents to Portland, Ore. Rhoda attended University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore., until March 1954 when she transferred to the University of Oregon Medical School, School of Nursing, (now OHSU). While in Eugene Rhoda joined Zeta Tau Alpha. She graduated from nursing school in December 1956 with her BSN.

Two weeks following graduation she married Warren Collier. They had three children together, Carmen Louise who died at the age of 15; Wade Warren and Cherie Mae. Warren and Rhoda later divorced.

While raising her three children, Rhoda was active at Hayhurst where the children went to grade school. She was a dancer in the “Hi Jinx” which was a variety show produced as a money-making show for Hayhurst. Rhoda made sure her children had outside activities and was always taking them to lessons throughout their growing up years. The girls were both active in Jobs Daughters, and Rhoda Guardian for Bethel 16 for several years. Carman was Guide when she passed away and Cherie followed in her sister’s footsteps and was Honored Queen.

From 1958 Rhoda was very active in her sorority, Zeta Tau Alpha, holding many offices both locally and nationally. Through Zeta she was also active in Portland Alumnae Panhellenics, holding the office of President five times, beginning in 1964. Following her divorce in 1972, she continued her involvement in sorority as well as holding full-time jobs. Twenty of these years were spent in management and starting up national companies for the area. She traveled extensively for her jobs. She owned two Foster Care Homes for adults and was self-employed for nine years. Her final full-time job was a faculty member for Pioneer Pacific College, Wilsonville, Ore., teaching in the Practical Nurse program and for seven years was the Clinical Coordinator. She retired from PPC at 80 years. After that she worked part-time for Interim Health Care at various jobs.

Rhoda was a “people” person and had many friends and acquaintances. She also was an organizer and organized reunions of her high school in Canada and of course then attended them. Rhoda kept track of relatives on both sides of her family and created several photo albums of the families. She also was interested in genealogy, so together with her friend and sorority sister, Tricia Oberndorf, learned of all her distant relatives. She also created several scrapbooks for her sorority history. Rhoda loved to bake, scrapbook, entertain and listening to Country Western music.

Rhoda will be missed and remembered by many in Canada and the Portland area where she had made her home since 1952. In October of 2018 Rhoda moved to Rockport, Texas to be near her only remaining child, Cherie. She lived one mile from Cherie and enjoyed life there ever since. She made many friends there and was an Ombudsman for care centers and assisted living centers.
