Richard Hedlund Obituary

Richard Carvell Hedlund was born in Portland, Oregon to Swedish immigrants, Oscar and Lilly Hedlund. He was one of nine boys. Richard was graduated from Roosevelt High School in Portland, Oregon, and received his Bachelor of Science degree at the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science.

Richard was a lifelong Funeral Director. He worked with Japanese American, Greek Orthodox, and Catholic families. Richard spent over 40 years at Hennessey Goetsch & McGee, and another 20 years at Riverview Abbey.

Richard served his country in Korea with the U.S. Army. He was a founding member of New Sweden Cultural Heritage Society of Oregon, and a proud member of Portland Bentham Lions Club, and the Japanese American Society. He was a world traveler, and was fond of spending time with family in Sweden.

Richard is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ethel; brother, Darrell; three children; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family appreciates the loving hospice care Richard received from Leon and Judith Lupu of Exclusive Home Care.

A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Mary’s Cathedral in Portland on Friday, July 26, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Sisters of the Holy Names, Marylhurst.
