Richard Charles Thompson grew up in Portland and graduated from Jefferson High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the Korean War.

Following his return to Portland, Richard attended Portland State and graduated in 1958. He then worked for Multnomah County as a Juvenile Probation Officer and Counselor for over 25 years.

In 1989, Richard was fortunate to survive a heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery. Shortly after that, he retired from Multnomah County and enjoyed working part-time for many years as an usher and then backstage at Portland’s Centers for the Arts theaters.

Richard met the love of his life Mary Kendler while attending Jefferson High – they were married in Portland in 1960 and celebrated 57 years of marriage prior to Mary’s death in 2017. They first lived in Portland where sons Blair and Christian were born and then in Beaverton for 45 years. Family, faith, and helping others were the foundations of Richard’s life. He was a devoted husband and father who also loved playing and watching sports, especially with family and friends.

Richard was a skier, golfer, and tennis player and shared his love of these sports with Mary and their sons. He enjoyed lots of great times skiing at Mt. Hood and later in life, playing golf around the Portland area and tennis at West Hills Racquet Club. And even at age 89, he had fun playing many rounds of golf with son Blair in 2020.

Richard passed away peacefully at home due to coronary failure and was preceded in death by wife, Mary; and son, Christian. He is survived by son, Blair; and brother, Thomas of Florence, Oregon.

A public funeral Mass with social distancing and masks required will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Beaverton, Oregon.
