Richard Greenhalgh Obituary

Richard Thomas Greenhalgh was laid to rest at Riverview Abbey Funeral Home on Thursday, August 13th. A retired Port of Portland policeman, he passed on August 9th with his family by his side at Mt. Hood Medical Center due to complications from prostate cancer. He was 71.

Richard was born in Portland, Oregon to Dr. Alma E. and Dorothy Greenhalgh. He attended Wilson High School. After serving in the Oregon National Guard, he graduated from Portland Community College, earning his Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice.

He worked for the Hillsboro Police Department for two years, then began his career at the Port of Portland Police Department. He retired after 25 years, then was called back out of retirement twice. He went back gladly; he loved his work so much he never really retired.

When he started a family, he came to know what he considered to be his true calling in life: being a father. He loved coffee, and was often known to surprise his kids with lattes in hand. He was endlessly supportive and loving, and he will be so missed.

Surviving him are his two daughters, Kathleen Thompson of Bend, Christine Greenhalgh of Portland, and a grandson Simon Thompson. A memorial dinner is planned for the end of August. For more information please email cgreenhalgh08@gmail.com

The family suggests remembrances be contributions to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
