January 17, 1923 ~ September 10, 2010 (age 87)
In June 1954, Rita and her sisters Assunta and Erminia Bruno immigrated to the U.S., where they joined their parents Giuseppe and Marietta Bruno in Southeast Portland.
Neighbors introduced Rita to Vito Chimienti, who she later wed Jan. 8, 1955. They built their home in Lake Oswego, where they raised three children, Carmela, Vito, and Vince.
Rita was a dedicated homemaker with a passion for sewing and cooking, especially fresh pasta for her family. She also enjoyed gardening and every year she canned her own tomato sauce and peaches.
Rita was deeply devoted to her Catholic faith, prayed the rosary daily, and rarely missed Sunday Mass.
Rita was a loving grandmother to Alejandra, Giancarlo, and Jose Carlos Valderrama and Elliott, Isabella, and Ava Chimienti. For 11 years she raised her grandson, Giancarlo, who needed extra care due to his cerebral palsy.
A recitation of the rosary was said in Italian during the viewing Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, as well as in English before the funeral Mass Friday, Sept. 17, in St. Clare Catholic Church. Her interment was held in Riverview Abbey. The family suggests that remembrances in Rita’s name be made to the American Cancer Society.
