May 3, 1923 ~ December 8, 2012 (age 89)
Bob was the second child of Peter Leipzig and Helena Hollevoet. His siblings are Jim (eldest), George, Genevieve Hainley and Dorothy. The family owned and operated the Leipzig Tavern, until it was sold just after the end of World War II following the deaths of Peter and Helena.
As devout Catholics, the family was a member of St. Agatha Parish and grade school. Bob graduated high school from Columbia Preparatory. In 1942, he began his college education at the University of Portland. Like so many young men during this era, Bob took a break from his studies in 1943 to proudly serve in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. In 1946, Ensign Robert Leipzig was honorably released from active service. He then continued his college studies, and in 1947, received a Business Administration degree from the University of Portland. Bob later studied advanced accounting at the University of Oregon in Eugene.
In high school, Bob met the love of his life, Jo Ann Allen. In 1946, they were happily married at the ages of 23 and 20. The couple began their life together in a small house in the Pinehurst neighborhood of Beaverton. From 1949 through 1966, Bob and Jo begat eight children. After the first six children, they moved to a larger residence in the Vermont Hills neighborhood in southwest Portland, where they would reside for 46 years.
The Leipzigs were one of many large Catholic families that founded St. John Fisher Parish in 1959. All eight of Bob and Jo’s children graduated from St. John Fisher, and for decades the children and grandchildren attended Portland-area Catholic high schools such as Jesuit, Central Catholic, St. Mary’s Academy and St. Mary’s of the Valley.
In 1951, Bob was hired by a small technology company in Beaverton known as Tektronix, which would later become the largest employer in the State of Oregon. He worked at Tek for 26 years before retiring as chief accountant.
In retirement, Bob was an avid tennis player and golfer. Bob believed in serving those in need; most notable was his 35 years as a volunteer with St. Vincent de Paul. With his generous gifts and life of charitable service, Bob was an inspiration to his family and friends.
Bob was a devoted husband to Jo for 66 years. From their nuptials June 22, 1946, he never once removed his wedding ring. Bob is survived by his wife, Jo; and their eight children, Kurt (Jackie) Leipzig, Mark (Soyoung) Leipzig, Karey (Mike) Manley, Rick (Mary) Leipzig, Tim (Marianne) Leipzig, Jody (Mark) Gordon, Frank (Nicole) Leipzig, Rob Leipzig; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way. Bob is also survived by his wonderful sister, Genevieve, who to this day remains an active member of St. Agatha Parish.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John Fisher (7101 SW 46th Ave., Portland, OR 97219) at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2012. Inurnment will be at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery (333 SW Skyline Blvd., Portland, OR 97221) at 1 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Vincent De Paul. Jo and family would like to extend their gratitude to John Olson and the staff at The Stafford, as well as Signature Hospice.
