October 25, 1918 ~ June 7, 2012 (age 93)
Roy is survived by Joyce, his wife of 65 years; children and spouses, Carol and Kent Wong, Marilyn and Randy Sprick, Bob Maeda and Kim Stone; and grandchildren, Travis Wong, Matt Sprick and Sonia Merriman, and Jessica Sprick and Habib Iddrisu. Roy was predeceased by son, David.
Born in Portland, Roy graduated from Jefferson High School. He was interned in Minidoka, Idaho; relocated to Peoria, Ill.; and served in the U.S. Army. Along with the 442nd Battalion, Roy recently received the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, having served as a Master Sergeant during World War II.
Following the war, Roy returned to Illinois and married his fiancee, Joyce Koga. After completing his degree in horology at Bradley University, Roy, Joyce, and daughter Carol returned to Portland where Roy raised his family and resumed his prewar employment at Jerome Margulis Jewelers. He worked at Margulis’ for over 60 years.
Roy’s family and friends will remember Roy for his mischievous sense of humor, his kindness and warm acceptance of everyone and his strong work ethic.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center or Epworth Methodist Church in Portland.
