Senator Hatfield Obituary

Mark Odom Hatfield was born in Dallas, Oregon on July 12, 1922. After serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II, Mr. Hatfield returned to Oregon to teach at Willamette University. He eventually became Dean of Men. Mr. Hatfield was elected to the Oregon State House in 1950 and was later elected Secretary of State in 1956. In 1959, Mark O. Hatfield was elected Governor of the State of Oregon. He served two terms in this office before being elected to the U.S.Senate in 1966 where he served four terms.

The Hatfield family held a private Concelebrated Funeral Mass and Christian Burial, followed by internment at Willamette National Cemetery with full military honors.

He is survived by his wife Antoinette and four children; Elizabeth, Theresa, Mark, Visko and several grandchildren, one of whom Mark, a Marine, died just four weeks ago.

Memorial contributions can be made to Portland Rescue Mission, Shepherd’s Door, 13207 NE Halsey, Portland, OR 97230 or St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Feed the Poor Program, 4112 SW 6th Avenue Drive, Portland, OR 97239.
