Sophia Corvallis Kriara passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024, at the age of 100. She was born on January 6, 1924 in Portland, Oregon, to Greek immigrants James and Panagoula Corvallis.
Sophia grew up in the Irvington district of Northeast Portland alongside her sister, Helen, and brothers, Bill and Peter. She attended Irvington Grade School and graduated from Grant High School in 1942. She began her career in the purchasing department at the Swan Island Shipyards, later working at US Bank and eventually becoming the bookkeeper for Portland Wholesale Grocery Co. Sophia married Gus Kriara on April 16, 1950, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Shortly after their marriage, Gus was stationed in Hawaii with the Navy, where Sophia later joined him. During this time in Honolulu they welcomed their first daughter Katherine. They eventually moved back to Portland, where their second daughter JoAnne was born. And in 1970, she co-founded Far West Foods with her husband Gus, a food import and distribution company Sophia and Gus cherished their many travels together, visiting Greece, Canada, Alaska,
and Mexico, among other places.
Sophia took great pride in her Greek heritage and was a lifelong member of Holy Trinity She was an active member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society and always enjoyed volunteering at the Greek Festival.
Sophia was pre-deceased by her husband, Gus, in 2009, as well as her three siblings, Bill Corvallis, Peter Corvallis and Helen Voreas and her grandson Matthew Peterson. She is survived by her two daughters, Katherine Peterson (Marvin) and JoAnne Grewe (Kent), as well as her beloved grandchildren, Nicky Peterson, Greg Peterson, Madeline Peterson, Diane Cody (Carson), Ali Remillard (Dan) and Michael Grewe. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Austin, Claire, and Dylan Cody.
A Trisagion service will be held on Sunday October 13 at 7 p.m. with a funeral service on Monday October 14 at 10 a.m. Both services will take place at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3131 NE Glisan Street.
