Stephen Mapes Obituary

Steve Mapes passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2017, after battling Alzheimer’s disease.
Steve was born in Portland and grew up in Garden Home and Tigard, where he graduated from high school in 1960. After studying at the University of Oregon and Portland State, he met and married the love of his life, Esta Anderson. They married in 1965 and moved back to Garden Home, where they raised their two children, Kevin and Kelli. Steve worked as a supervisor for the Portland Water Bureau, where he retired in 1998.
Steve was an avid runner, completing multiple marathons, including a sub-three hour marathon at age 40. He loved cheering on the Ducks and the Trail Blazers and supporting his children and grandchildren in their sports and other activities. Steve and Esta traveled the world, but he always loved returning to the family beach house in Road’s End.
The Garden Home community was always an important part of Steve’s life, including the school that was attended by three generations of Mapes students and the community center that grew from it.
Steve cherished his wife, Esta, his family, and his friends. He was a fabulous husband, father, and papa to his granddaughters, “the girls.” In his honor, please raise a pint, a glass of Oregon wine, or a good cup of coffee. He will be dearly missed.
Steve is survived by his wife, Esta; his son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Patti; his daughter and son-in-law, Kelli and Eric Anderson; and his granddaughters, Madeline and Audrey Mapes and Grace Anderson.
The family wants to thank Housecall Providers, Housecall Providers Hospice, Hunt Club Senior Living, and Luanna and the other care givers.
No service is planned. A celebration of life may be held later. To honor Steve’s memory, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

We are sorry to hear about your loss. Sickness has robbed us of our loved ones resulting in their death. May these scriptures bring you all comfort. Isaiah 33:24 promises ,”And no resident will say: I am sick. The people dwelling in the land will be pardoned for their error.” When Jesus was on earth he healed the sick and raised the dead. At John 11:25 “Jesus said to her: I am the resurrection and the life. The one who exercises faith in me, even though he dies, will come to life.” What a wonderful hope we can look forward to and may God strengthened you in the days ahead.
