September 21, 1946 ~ January 13, 2015 (age 68)
Tom is survived by his step-children and their spouses, Jim and AJ Sloan and Elizabeth Sloan and Walter Cahall; his grandchildren Audrey and Nate Sloan, and Theo and Henry Cahall; his friend and partner Shelly McFarland; and a loving extended family.
Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Claire Collier, his brother Gerald Hoffmann, and his parents.
Tom served as Sergeant in the Army from 1969-1973. Tom was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. He received the M-14 Sharp Shooter Medal and also a National Defense Service Medal. His fire arms enthusiasm continued post-discharge and he remained a skilled competitive marksman throughout his life.
Tom was talented academically and attended the University of Southern California and graduated from Whittier College. In his early career he was a purchasing executive in the film industry. In the latter part of his working life Tom enjoyed his Financial Analyst position and also the collegial and supportive environment at Al Angelo Company through his retirement in May, 2014.
Family was deeply important to Tom, and he was an especially devoted grandfather. Among many other things, he cheered his grandchildren at countless youth sporting events; tirelessly played board games and Legos with them; and treated them to many plays and fishing trips.
Tom’s patience, kindness and love will be greatly missed. Donations in his honor may be made to the Imago Theatre, the Cedar Mill Library or the American Cancer Society.
A memorial service including military honors will be held on Friday, February 13th at 11:00 at Willamette National Cemetery (11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd). A reception will follow at Gustav’s (12605 SE 97th Ave).
