Vincent Deguc Obituary

Vincent Anthony Deguc, 71, passed away on April 29, 2022 from complications of Alzheimer’s. Vince was born in South Bend, IN, the son of Anthony Deguc and Lillian (Zalas) Deguc. Vince’s paternal grandparents and maternal great-grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Poland, and Vince grew up in a loving, bilingual home and neighborhood. Vince’s dream came true when he was accepted to the University of Notre Dame. He graduated in 1972, the first college graduate in his family. Three weeks later, he married Beverly Box in Sacred Heart Cathedral on the Notre Dame campus. Vince remained a true Notre Dame fan for the rest of his life.

Soon after their wedding, Vince and Bev moved to Portland, OR for Vince to attend Northwestern School of Law of Lewis and Clark College. Vince graduated with a J.D. in 1975. He worked at the Urban Indian Center of Portland as a Volunteer in Service to America until 1977, when he opened his own practice. When asked what his specialty was, he would reply “the needs of my clients.” Vince continued to meet the needs of his clients until he retired in 2018.

Vince and Bev had two daughters, and Vince enjoyed volunteering in many activities with them. He was a girls basketball coach and an adult Girl Scouts volunteer. His professional volunteer interests included the Metropolitan Human Relations Commission, Washington County Public Affairs Forum, Westside Professional and Business Associates, and various committees for the Oregon State Bar Association. Vince was also a long-time member of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Catholic Church and served on the Parish Council and as an usher and reader.

Vince’s father and several relatives worked at Studebaker Corporation in South Bend and Vince drove Studebaker vehicles for many years, especially his favorite gold Avanti. He was a member of the NW Chapter of the Studebaker Drivers Club and chaired the International Studebaker Meet in Portland in 1993. Vince and Bev also enjoyed traveling and took several cruises and a special bus tour of Poland.

Vince is survived by his wife, Beverly; daughters Elizabeth (Jason) Francis of Lincoln City and Emily Raymond of Hillsboro; and three grandsons: Allen Vincent Francis, Daniel Higgins, and Nicolas Raymond.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Vince can be made to The Oregon Food Bank or to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church,

I knew Vince as a fellow attorney and I am proud to say he was a friend of mine. Although I haven’t been in touch with Vince since my retirement, my chosen home of Oregon will be poorer without his presence. Rest in Peace brother, your compassion to help the neediest sets a high bar for the legal profession.

Honoring my Buddy Vince;

While you transitioned, Buddy Vince, your wife Bev and I sat by your hospital bedside reminiscing your 50 years together, our bonded friendship and adventures of 40 years when my late husband Gordon was alive.

So many memories,

It all started when both our families were part of a baby sitting co op, then on to a Girl Scout connection, Our daughters were of similar age and connected thru troop and neighborhood Girl Scout activities. You and Gordon would join us on camp outs, sometimes doing the cooking in the kitchens with other fathers, or just troop camping with our troop. A Wolfhaven and Wildwaves campout comes to mind, you and Gordon took the day off to go check out the Boeing field together. You regularly greeted one another with the term Buddy. After our daughters left, for college and careers, our bonded friendship continued with regular dinners, usually at a pub. You and I quaffed our beers. Bev and Gordon drank their juice/ coke or hot chocolate/ coffee.

We also shared fun July 4th fireworks and New Years Eve get togethers, day excursions and occasional weekend beach trips, In 1998 we met in Las Vegas for a memorable 2 days, going to a Star Wars exhibition, driving thru rain that flooded the underpasses in Vegas and surviving the heat.

You were driving your Avanti which at that time had no air conditioning, Phew! The 2 day trip back to Portland was fun, our car had air conditioning so Bev and I got to travel together much of the time.

Vince, you were also a competent, compassionate defense attorney and helped many community causes pro bono. When you decided to run to be a Judge, you and Gordon walked the streets together handing out fliers, posting signs or going to parades in one of your Vintage Studebakers.

Our last trip together before Gordon passed was up the gorge to the Hood River car museum, and back via the Bonneville dam exhibit on the Washington side of the river.

A couple of years after Gordon passed, you retired and would occasionally call me to go to a store, bank, Beaverton flower shop, or the lawn mower repair shop OR your favorite stopping place, the Original Bavarian Sausage and Delicatessen.

During COVID you and Bev often stopped by to visit, fix/ build something for me and enjoy your favorites, root beer or a good strong coffee, hot and sour soup and Kung Pao chicken outdoors. Once vaxxed, and were able be inside we would watch Gene Autry or Star war movies together. Rest In Peace, Buddy Vince, from your Buddy Glen
