William Dugan Obituary

Born July 29, 1934 in Seattle, WA, Bill passed peacefully in his sleep September 30, 2022 at his Laurel Parc apartment in Portland, OR.

The Dugan family moved to Portland during Bill’s elementary school years.  It was his time at Grant High School that would begin to define who Bill would become.  Bill was a star football player at Grant and shared stories and memories of old friends from Grant right up until the end. Graduating in 1952 it was on to Oregon State University next.  It was in Corvallis that Bill’s life would change forever, meeting Pauline “Pat” Herren and starting a lifelong romance and eventual family.  ROTC in college wasn’t quite enough for Bill so the Air Force and flight school were next.  A ten year career, including active duty flying for Strategic Air Command, and then reserve duty flying for the 304th Air Rescue Squadron in Portland ended in1966, but not before attending and graduating DMD from the Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry, in Portland, Oregon, in 1965, where he later taught. Bill practiced dentistry in the Hollywood district for 12 years but also had a teaching position at the OHSU School of Dentistry that started in 1965. Teaching and mentoring were Bill’s true passions and his time at OHSU in different capacities would span nearly five decades.  He just couldn’t seem to leave this place or group of colleagues.

When not teaching, Bill loved to fish and build intricate things. Clocks, stained glass windows and any number of electronic devices were meticulously crafted in his basement shop. Even the family’s television came from that productive room. Later in life, Bill’s love of travel took over and annual trips to far flung places captivated his time and imagination.

Bill was preceded in death by his dear wife Pat who passed away in 2000, and his brother Jack who passed away in 2021.  Bill is survived by his daughter Kathleen “Casey” Carlson and her husband David and their two children Jack and Ruby; son Patrick and his wife Polly and their two sons Finn and Brady, and his longtime companion Sally Jo Farnes.
